Dynamic characterization for the dielectric electroactive polymer fundamental sheet
2012
Published version of an article published in the journal: International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00170-012-4423-6 A study into the appropriateness of characterizing the dynamics of the dielectric electroactive polymer (DEAP) fundamental sheet has been performed. Whereby a model describing the dynamics of the DEAP fundamental sheet is developed, parameters of the models are determined using experimental/simulation results, and verification has been conducted to determine the precision of the dynamic model. The precision for the DEAP sheet-obtained dynamic model could not be verified unless some parameters c…
Intraosseous monitoring of drilling in lumbar vertebrae by ultrasound: An experimental feasibility study.
2016
The rationale for this project is to evaluate the efficiency of a novel sonographic method for measurements of interosseous distances. The method utilizes a propagating ultrasonic beam through aqueous milieu which is directed as a jet into a drilled tract. We used a plastic model of human L5 vertebra and ex vivo specimen of L5 porcine vertebra and generated 2 mm in diameter tracts in vertebral pedicles. The tracts were created in the "desired" central direction and in the "wrong" medial and lateral directions. The drilled tracts and the residual, up to opposite cortex, distances were measured sonographically and mechanically and compared statistically. We show that "true" mechanical measure…
Seismic evaluation of ordinary RC buildings retrofitted with externally bonded FRPs using a reliability-based approach
2020
International audience; Despite the extensive literature on reinforced concrete (RC) members retrofitted with fiberreinforced polymer (FRP) composites, few studies have employed a reliability-based approach to evaluate the seismic performance of RC buildings in terms of their collapse capacity and ductility. In this study, the performance of a poorly-confined RC building structure is investigated for different FRP retrofitting schemes using different configurations and combinations of wrapping and flange-bonded FRPs, as two well-established techniques. A nonlinear pushover analysis is then implemented with a computational reliability analysis based on Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) to deter…
Correlation of epoxy material properties with the toughening effect of fullerene-like WS2 nanoparticles
2016
Abstract This work deals with the toughening effect of inorganic, fullerene-like WS2 (IF-WS2) nanoparticles (NPs) on epoxy. It has been hypothesized that this toughening effect depends on the epoxy’s cross-link density, its molecular defect fraction or its reference fracture toughness K Ic . Seven different epoxy systems were filled with 0.5% laboratory-made IF-WS2 NPs by mass and investigated in order to analyze which material properties are determining the toughening effect. These NPs were similar to commercially available IF-WS2 NPs, but their agglomerates could not be broken up as successfully and they yielded less toughening effect. The cross-link density of the epoxies measured via dy…
Correction: Mechanical properties of provisional dental materials: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
2018
Provisional restorations represent an important phase during the rehabilitation process, knowledge of the mechanical properties of the available materials allows us to predict their clinical performance. At present, there is no systematic review, which supports the clinicians’ criteria, in the selection of a specific material over another for a particular clinical situation. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess and compare the mechanical properties of dimethacrylates and monomethacrylates used in fabricating direct provisional restorations, in terms of flexural strength, fracture toughness and hardness. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines. The searche…

A unique microstructure of the fiber networks deposited from foam-fiber suspensions
2015
Abstract Fiber networks can be formed using aqueous foam as the suspending medium. The mean bubble size of the foam affects the resulting pore-size distribution of the fiber network. The foam–fiber interactions cause in particular an increase in the proportion of large micropores of the network, in comparison with the fiber networks that result from traditional water forming at a similar material density. Experiments were carried out for two different types of cellulose fiber, and characterization of the resulting pore structure was based on X-ray microtomography of the resulting fiber networks. The unique pore structure obtained with foam forming was reflected in various macroscopic proper…
Abundance and Distribution Patterns of Thunnus albacares in Isla del Coco National Park through Predictive Habitat Suitability Models
2016
Information on the distribution and habitat preferences of ecologically and commercially important species is essential for their management and protection. This is especially important as climate change, pollution, and overfishing change the structure and functioning of pelagic ecosystems. In this study, we used Bayesian hierarchical spatial-temporal models to map the Essential Fish Habitats of the Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) in the waters around Isla del Coco National Park, Pacific Costa Rica, based on independent underwater observations from 1993 to 2013. We assessed if observed changes in the distribution and abundance of this species are related with habitat characteristics, fis…
Automatic or manual arterial path for the ankle-brachial differences pulse wave velocity
2018
Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la página web de la revista en la siguiente URL: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0206434 An automated method for measuring arterial path length with devices that determine pulse wave velocity (PWV) in peripheral arteries is frequently applied. We aimed to compare arterial path length measurements based on mathematical height-based formulas with those measured manually and to assess whether the ankle-brachial difference (abD-PWV) measured with the VOPITB device is comparable to that obtained by manual measurements. In 245 patients, a metric measuring tape was used to determine the arterial path length from the suprast…
